Cameroon Unveils Groundbreaking National ID System: Fast-Tracked Enrollment and 48-Hour Card Delivery Set to Transform Citizenship Documentation

Cameroon is set to roll out its highly anticipated secure national identification system in just a week from now, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to modernize its identity management processes. Martin Mbarga Nguele, the Delegate General for National Security (DGSN), unveiled the timeline during a ceremony on January 31, where he reviewed the police force’s achievements in 2024 and outlined key initiatives for the year ahead.

The new system will officially kick off on February 17 with the launch of online pre-enrollment, followed by biometric data collection starting February 24. According to Mbarga Nguele, the process mirrors the existing framework for biometric passport issuance, ensuring a streamlined and efficient experience for applicants. He emphasized that physical enrollment will commence in regional capitals, with national identity cards being issued within a maximum of 48 hours. Sometimes, applicants may even receive their cards before the two-day deadline.

For Cameroonians who already have receipts from the old identification system and no pending issues with their applications, the DGSN is actively working to issue updated ID cards in the new format. These individuals are expected to receive their cards before February 17, 2025, when the new system’s pre-enrollment phase officially begins. Additionally, those with cases of double identity, who have filed complaints since January 10, will be invited to enrol in the new system starting February 17.

Mbarga Nguele also highlighted a concerning backlog, noting that 385,000 uncollected ID cards remain in police stations nationwide as of the end of 2024. He stressed that the new system, launched under the directive of the Head of State, aims to resolve long-standing challenges related to the production and distribution of national ID cards. The initiative seeks to ensure that every Cameroonian has access to this essential document, which serves as a cornerstone of citizenship.

The DGSN’s partnership with Augentic, formalized in May 2023 through a 15-year contract, is central to the project’s implementation. As part of the agreement, 68 new multi-functional facilities will be established, including state-of-the-art ID production centres in Yaoundé, Douala, and Garoua, as well as enrollment centres in regional and divisional headquarters. Additionally, 219 existing registration centres will undergo renovations, and new equipment will be deployed across all locations. Augentic is also collaborating with the DGSN on a transition plan to phase out the current generation of ID cards.

The upcoming launch has generated widespread enthusiasm among Cameroonians, who hope the new system will finally address the persistent difficulties associated with obtaining national ID cards. With its promise of efficiency, accessibility, and security, the initiative represents a transformative leap forward in the country’s identity management infrastructure.
