Ethiopia Showcases Solar Energy Progress at 6th African Regional Committee Meeting of the International Solar Alliance"

The Honorable Minister of Water and Energy, Dr. E.R. Habtamu Itefa, who was appointed to the post on 5th October 2021 by H.E Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has underscored Ethiopia’s advancements in solar energy development during the 6th African Regional Committee meeting of the International Solar Alliance, held in Abidjan. The Minister highlighted the pivotal role solar energy plays in providing access to clean drinking water and supporting agricultural practices across the nation. Dr. Itefa shared details on several ongoing solar energy initiatives in Ethiopia, which are being developed with the assistance of the International Solar Alliance.
Key undertakings include the scaling-up of solar mini-grids, the deployment of rooftop solar systems, and the construction of solar parks. The Minister also emphasized the establishment of a solar energy training and knowledge enhancement center, alongside efforts to develop Ethiopia’s regulatory framework for solar energy.
One of the notable projects showcased was the solar-powered water pump system in Yergachefe, located in Southern Ethiopia. This project has become a benchmark for other African countries in leveraging solar energy for practical purposes. Furthermore, Dr. Itefa participated in an online discussion with Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance, to explore ways to enhance the collaboration between Ethiopia and the Alliance.
The 6th African Regional Committee meeting of the International Solar Alliance was convened from August 23-25, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
